Your walk down the aisle is your personal red carpet moment. You want to look – and you can look – lovelier than at any other time of your life. Start now to experiment with new products to find what works best for you.
It’s also the time to update your hair and makeup. Too many women get stuck in a look that can reach right back to high school!
It’s important to test colours, textures and the reaction of your skin to new products long before your big day.
Reminders for getting photo-ready
Test makeup colour when wearing a white blouse or white T-shirt (if your dress will be white).
- Avoid spray-on or self-tanners close to the wedding date. They may streak or discolour.
- Avoid salty foods the day before your wedding. Salt can make you look puffy.
- Consider location – the strength or drama of your makeup will depend on whether you’re married on a beach, in a garden or in a church.
- Cleanse your face thoroughly every night and then apply moisturizer.
- Don’t squeeze a pimple or blackhead. Put yourself in the hands of an aesthetician.
- Remember photography – when you have refined your makeup, take plenty of pictures to see how well it will look in photos.
- Stop testing new products at least a month before your wedding to guard against a skin eruption.
- Use sun protection every day, regardless of the weather.
Quiz your makeup artist
If you decide to use a makeup artist, be certain that they will define your personal look and not superimpose their own preferences.
Get references from friends, from a retail makeup consultant or from your hair salon.
Interview them before having a test makeup done.
Quiz questions
- What is their specific experience in working with brides?
- Do they have a backup should they become ill?
- Do they bring their makeup or do you supply your own?
- What is their fee? By the hour? By the day?
- Do they stay until after the service for touchups? If not, have them show you what to do.
