Vancouver couple Helen Schikkerling and Joel Culver were actually tattooed on their wedding day. “We intentionally set our wedding schedule so that there was enough time between our ceremony and reception to get tattooed,” says Helen. “My husband and I both have lots of tattoos and both felt that a tattoo was a great way to show our commitment to each other. There’s nothing more permanent!”
Helen says one of her favourite moments of the day was “strolling into Sacred Heart Tattoo in a wedding dress, made up and glamorous, and the look on the faces of the other patrons!”
Joel proposed by creating a children’s storybook, featuring a bear (Joel) and a fox (Helen). So the choice of ink was an easy one. “The story book told the tale of how we met and how we fell in love,” explains Helen. “And the last page was him asking me to marry him. In the book, he was depicted as a little bear and I was a little purple fox (our self proclaimed spirit animals – mine was purple because my hair was purple for most of our dating life and our wedding).”
Guests were alarmed at first, as the newlyweds walked into the reception with bandaged wrists. “When we told them that we went for tattoos, the usual response was, ‘Of course you did! That’s so you guys!’”
