- Cut travel costs by going during the summer or fall months (if going south). These are the low-rate seasons.
- Check your destination’s website. Obtain specifics about weather, customs and other details.
- Protect yourself; purchase comprehensive travel insurance before you leave home.
- Photocopy all of your travel documents and leave with a relative for security.
- Check passport validity. Applications take at least three months prior to your trip.
- Is a visa required for your destination? Check Passport Canada’s website for country specific information.
- Are vaccinations required for your destination? It is unlikely, but check to be sure.
- Pack medicines in carry-on bags. Be sure to keep them in their original packaging.
- Inquire if there is a departure tax and what currency is required. Purchase local currency for emergencies, cabs and tipping.
- Inquire what type of electricity is provided. Many hotels have both 110 volts and 220 volts available.
- Check what attire is expected. Attire will be informal on a beach holiday, but remember that beach attire is not appropriate for town, shops, museums or restaurants. Many resorts stipulate jacket and tie for men and dresses for women in the evening.
- Bring a hat, sunglasses and bug spray if you’re heading south.
- Use sun block if going on a beach holiday. UV rays are stronger the closer you get to the equator.
- Bring comfortable walking shoes for sight-seeing as well as sneakers or beach shoes.
- Check business hours. In much of Europe and on the islands, business may close during the lunch hour siesta.
- Cut a deal with a local taxi driver to act as your tour guide throughout your vacation.
- Confirm price and what currency is quoted when booking a taxi or charter guide. Check to see if a gratuity is added to your bill. If not, tip 15 percent. Give porters and bellhops about $1 per bag, taxi drivers 15 percent of the fare.
- Enquire about the ease of keeping in touch with the family back home.
- Ask if cell phone coverage is available, but also check with your carrier to ensure you have international calling privileges.
- Avoid drinking alcohol when flying. You get dehydrated. But when you arrive, have a great time.
