An engagement ring holds a rather dazzling amount of meaning for something that fits inside a velvet box. But before carat sizes and cathedral settings take over the conversation, there’s one decision that matters most: choosing a price that feels right.
Forget the three-month salary rule
That old formula deserves a graceful retirement. Income alone says very little about what someone can comfortably afford, especially when rent, student loans, travel plans, a future home and the wedding itself may all be competing for attention.
A better engagement ring budget begins with available savings and monthly breathing room. If paying for the ring would drain an emergency fund, delay essential bills or create high-interest debt, the number is too high. There’s no universally correct percentage. Set a ceiling that protects other priorities, then shop confidently within it. Romance feels considerably better without financial resentment tagging along.

Current Canadian prices stretch from under $1,500 to well beyond $20,000, depending on the centre stone, metal, setting and brand. Gold prices have climbed sharply, while lab-grown diamond prices have moved in the opposite direction.

Spend on what the eye actually notices
