Beloved hockey star Doug Gilmour and his girlfriend of 11 years, Sonya Victoria, tied the knot in a tropical ceremony in Hamilton, Ont.
Doug and Sonya have lovingly referred to each other as husband and wife for years, but decided that they wanted to make it official to celebrate their love for each other and for their family. here’s what Sonya had to say about the big day.
TODAY’S BRIDE: What kind of vibe were you aiming for?
SONYA GILMOUR: We wanted our guests to feel like they were at a destination. Our favourite part was seeing it all come to life and how everyone thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the wedding. The food and alcohol stations (a vodka bar and a sangria bar) made everyone move around, mingle and try different items all night.
TB: Do any special moments stand out?
SG: Seeing the look on Doug’s face when I sang a Portuguese love song with the most powerful tenor, Remigio Pereira. Doug didn’t get to experience the time in my life where I sang professionally or hear my song on the radio, or see my performances. Also, we had McDonald’s delivered by the Hamburglar himself!
TB: Would you have done anything differently?
SG: Doug and I would honestly not change a thing. Doing décor for a living, I had my hands in all details from small to large, and we worked with the best people to make it all come to life. We still get messages and phone calls from people, saying how it was the best wedding they have attended – a Miami flair, dance floor packed, a celebration and party to remember.
TB: Will married life change you?
SG: Being a united family for so long, marriage will be just the same for us, just more memories and precious moments to be made. We are so incredibly blessed and it’s a wonderful feeling knowing we are truly united now.
