Want to stay in the moment while on your honeymoon? Unplug yourself from all distractions with these useful tips
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
After the whirlwind of your wedding, sipping cocktails on the beach is exactly what you need to relax and recharge as newlyweds. But then … your phone rings with an urgent message from your boss, or you get a reminder for an upcoming appointment, or you feel your fingers twitching to check your email. Before you know it, you’ve spent your entire honeymoon answering messages and scrolling on your phone. To truly detach yourself from the daily grind (and celebrate your newly married status), you’ll need to pull the plug on all your devices – your phone, tablet, laptop, all of it. Sounds impossible? Maybe. But with paradise all around, it’s certainly worth a shot.
Tell your inner circle
Before you leave for your honeymoon, tell your family and friends to leave you alone. Sounds harsh, right? But giving your loved ones a head’s up that you don’t want to be disturbed while on your trip is a must if you’re going to digitally detox. This means no calls to tell you the latest gossip, no texts about lunch next week, and no updates on the latest Netflix binge. Emergencies only – period. Simply alert those closest to you that you’ve arrived safely and that you’ll be in touch again upon your arrival home.
Turn on out-of-office
It seems obvious but turning on your out-of-office message before departing on your honeymoon will give you the peace of mind of not having to reply to work emails while you’re away. You can take this one step further and turn on a vacation alert for your personal email account too, which will notify Aunt Jean who’s looking for your banana bread recipe that she’ll have to wait for a reply until your return.
Set boundaries
Perhaps unplugging from all devices is too much to bear – and that’s okay. So long as you and your partner agree to the same parameters, there won’t be any squabbles over who’s posting what and when. Decide on a digital detox plan before leaving for your honeymoon. Maybe answering emails before breakfast is allowed, or posting one photo or video a day on your socials is the way to go. If you’re both on the same page about what’s acceptable when it comes to screen time, your honeymoon will be the better for it.
Have paper copies
In today’s digital age, there’s hardly a need for anything paper. Airline tickets, hotel confirmations, spa reservations, car rentals – all of it gets sent straight to your inbox or digital wallet. But we know how it goes – once you check your phone for your boarding pass, you’ll reply to other emails, which will lead to your family group chat and before long you’re on YouTube watching the funny goat clip your cousin just forwarded. Avoid all temptation by printing every booking, confirmation and reservation before heading to the airport. Having paper copies of all essential documents will keep you off your phone and in the moment.
