You have your wedding attire. You’re looking good. But how do you make sure that you maintain that level of perfection throughout your wedding day?
Here are a few ways to stay stylish all day long.
TIP #1 Get shoe-ready
Chances are you’ll be wearing never-been-worn footwear on your wedding day, so take precautions. Try to break them in around the house before your wedding. Practise walking in heels if they aren’t normally your thing. Address those slippery soles by scuffing them up a bit so you aren’t slip-sliding down the aisle.
Bring bandages, a blister stick or an extra pair of shoes in case blisters pop up. Also, be aware of your environment; stilettos and soft grass/lawn do not mix (you’ll be sinking into the ground pretty quickly)! Opt for chunkier heels or flats, or purchase heel stoppers (small rubber pieces that slide over your heels to make them slightly wider and keep your heels clean).
TIP #2 Shine things up
A good photographer will snap photos of all the details. This means your rings and all other jewelry need to be perfectly polished. Before your wedding day, have them professionally cleaned at a jewelry store so your jewels will sparkle. (Be sure your shoes are shined, too!).
TIP #3 Get steamy
Make sure everything is steamed! The best outfit can end up looking terrible if it’s filled with wrinkles. Don’t take chances with your dress or suit – enlist a professional to do the job. Have it pressed prior to the big day, or ask someone to come to the house to iron out all the details (get it?). This goes for the groomsmen and bridesmaids, too.
TIP #4 Emergency kit
A fashion emergency kit is a must-have. Here are some amazing necessities you should have handy:
- A sewing kit, complete with needle, thread and safety pins for fixing minor rips and tears. Toss in some extra buttons for good measure.
- White chalk or baby powder can be used to cover stains or marks on a white wedding dress.
- A stain-removing pen or stain-removal wipes are also a good idea.
- Clear nail polish acts like glue and can stop runs in nylons.
- Double-sided tape can be your best friend on your wedding day. Keep those plunging necklines in place!
- Anti-perspirant will help avoid unsightly stains throughout the day (and keep you smelling fresh).
- Fabric tape will help keep seams and folds in place, and come in handy in case of unexpected tears or rips.
- A lint roller will keep wedding attire look immaculate all day, particularly suits, jackets and pants.
TIP #5 Mind the wind
A perfect look can be ruined by pesky gusts of wind, but there are ways you can prepare. If you’re wearing a veil but have your heart set on an outdoor wedding, have a backup plan in place. An out-of-control veil will ruin photos and be so annoying it will take you out of the moment. If it’s a breezy day, ditch the veil. Also, guests won’t want to see those perfect undergarments (see tip #7). Have you heard of dress weights? You stick them to the hem of your dress to keep the skirt down and undies hidden.
TIP #6 Learn to tie
It seems silly but it’s true – many people don’t know how to tie a tie. Before the wedding, try to master this skill, as a tie may need to be adjusted throughout the day. Tying a bowtie is master-level; if you aren’t comfortable, find a pre-tied bowtie. Luckily, most rented suits and tuxes come with ready-to-wear bowties, so you’re safe.
TIP #7 Check your underwear
Wear appropriate undergarments. No, we don’t mean sexy, we mean comfortable. While we aren’t against bra straps in everyday fashion, they have no place on your wedding day. The same goes with bunchy undies or boxers. Purchase well-fitting garments and try them with your outfit ahead of time to be sure they aren’t showing and that you are comfy.
TIP #8 Go extra
Pack extra everything with you – extra shoes, pantyhose, undershirts, tie, dress shirt, etc. Stains happen. Spills happen. Sweat happens. You’ll want to be prepared. You may even consider packing an entirely new outfit for your reception. Consider a second dress or suit that is party-ready.
TIP #9 Wear a bib
We aren’t joking. If you’re eating before the wedding ceremony (which we definitely encourage), then cover yourself up with a bib. And by bib, we mean tucking a beach towel into the front of your dress and covering up as much as possible. A too-enthusiastic toast, for example, could leave you wearing your Champagne, so be extra careful with food and drink.
