What is the inspiration behind this wedding inspiration? Laura Chapman, the brains behind the planning and design of this shoot, shares here thoughts.
The couple: I am all about having an Indigenous, tattooed, successful female entrepreneur as our modern-day Cinderella representation; so as soon as our model, Pala, and her high school sweetheart agreed to be our models, I knew where the storyline was going!
The venue: You already know that the Okanagan in B.C, is filled with stunning mountains, vast lake views, and spectacular wineries – so I wanted to showcase an equally beautiful yet unique venue that you may not have known about. (Some of the local vendors had never even seen this place!) The Kaleden Hotel Park historic hotel ruins has stunning castle vibes but with the price tag of approximately $400 for 8 hours. Dress it up for a more lavish feel, or just add chairs if you want to keep it simple; beautiful either way and a great fit for any budget.
The design: Bold yet natural, vintage yet modern, feminine and strong, and ultimately designed to feel like the décor has been growing as part of this historic venue. The intent was to use colour, bows, tulle, florals and texture while maintaining a sense of timelessness without feeling “frou-frou”. I demonstrated a vintage feel while minimizing gold/metal accents, instead piling broken landscaping stones to hold the ceremony florals and using stone vases throughout, as well as crystal accents for some vintage class. Finally, I included an ornate tablecloth and area rug as well as a fire mantle for a slight Victorian feel.
The attire: Many brides may not want a veil for a few reasons, whether they don’t love the traditional feel, they would rather show off their accessories, or don’t want a veil to ruin their hairstyle. I wanted to show an alternative for those brides and added a custom belted veil, which added the drama of a cathedral veil or cape. We adorned this gorgeous veil, the bride’s shoes and the adorable dog’s collars with real flowers, again to feel like an extension from the vine-filled venue.
The pandemic guest count: The final intent was to emphasize that a small guest count doesn’t mean that you can’t have the theme or glam feel that you always dreamt of. 0 guests? 10 guests? You can still have the beautiful live music, videographer, elaborate set-up with your dream princess feel, you can have your dogs stand beside you, or really anything you want. During these crazy times I want couples to make the celebration of their love exactly as they want it to be.
