Clean your makeup brushes & purge your products!

Chances are you have some time on your hands right now and have begun cleaning your home from top to bottom. So what about your makeup? L’Oréal Paris’ Makeup Artist and Expert, Jodi Urichuk has some tips to keep your tools clean and get the most out of your beauty products.

How to clean your makeup brushes:

Treat your brushes like you would treat your hair. Since deep cleaning is very important for the longevity of your brushes, try washing them with L’Oréal Paris Extraordinary Oil Shampoo/Conditioner to leave them feeling soft and looking clean.
When cleaning more stubborn product like foundation, concealer and lipstick, try using dish soap.
Always keep your brushes facing down while running them under the tap and keep water away from the ferrule (the metal connecting the brush head to the handle).
After rinsing, gently squeeze out any access water in the brush head and lay it flat to dry.
Attempt to clean your brushes once a week to protect them from collecting bacteria and also to help preserve the longevity of your makeup products.

How to get the most out of your products:

When determining whether you should keep a product, look for an expiry date and then check the smell and consistency of the product.
The bathroom isn’t the most ideal place to store your makeup since humidity allows bacteria to thrive in moist environments. Try storing your makeup in a cool, dry spot.
If you’re almost out of a product in a tube, try cutting off the bottom and dig out what’s left into a smaller, easy to use container.
If your mascara is running out, add a few drops of saline solution to help with the consistency and give you a few more uses.
Just when your lipstick seems like it’s impossible to use, remember that there is still half a bullet of product left in there. Dig it out and put it in a palette or container to make sure you use every last inch of product.
Remember to wash and detail your shadows, blushes and creams as well as their lids with Isopropyl alcohol or brush cleaner and a q-tip to really get into every corner.
Purge your old stuff. Keep in mind: Mascara lasts about 3 months. Powders can last anywhere between 1 to 2 years. Foundation can last between 6 months to a year, but if in a sealed bottle it can last up to 2 years. Lipstick lasts about 2 years.
