Right now, we are all looking for new shows to watch. Luckily, CityTv has something new for us: The Wedding Planners. The romantic family drama starts Friday March 27 at 8:00. It follows the lives of three siblings who have recently lost their wedding-planning mother. They team up to finish all the weddings she had booked. Every episode comes with a new couple and new wedding planning challenges.
The siblings include Paige (Kimberly-Sue Murray), the young mom balancing work and family, James (Michael Seater), the New York City fashion designer with a troubled past, and Hannah (Madeline Leon), the peacekeeper with a kind heart and adventurous spirit who is also looking for love.
We sat down with the cast and asked them a few questions about the show and their thoughts on wedding planning.
TB: You all were thrown into becoming wedding planners. Do you have any advice you can pass on or anything you’ve learned from being on set?
Michael:I mean, I have to say that personally, I am kind of killer at a wedding in real life. I’ve MCed my friend’s wedding. I asked her if she wanted me to just introduce a couple speeches or do the full MC thing and she was like, ‘what’s that?’ So I said if there’s a wedding planner, I would liaise with them about the schedule, I will introduce the wedding party when they come in… And she was like, ‘Yes please!’ So I really threw down on that.
And one time I was a plus-one at a wedding, I wasn’t even an official guest. And in the 24 hours leading up to the wedding, I somehow became the bride’s personal assistant. I had to go get a dress she had forgotten, I had to get umbrellas for everybody, I had to get a plate of food for her. So I felt prepared for this job.
Kimberly-Sue: I’ve only been to two weddings, and a third coming up, a destination wedding. But I am now a go-to bridesmaid and I can throw a pretty cool bachelorette. So I know I’m pretty good at that.
Michael: Actually, I am going to say you are pretty bad at it considering you’ve only been to two weddings.
TB: Well what’s the key to a good bachelorette party?
Kimberly-Sue: Well that’s the thing. You need to know your bride. So my friend is a homebody, so we rented a place in Prince Edward County with all of her closest friends. I made some… (oh my gosh I can’t believe I am going to say this)… I made some plant-based food because I am the vegan one in the group and we did a clothing swap and we played games and it was exactly what she wanted.
But that would be my planning advice. Know your bride and groom and try to help them get the wedding that they want. There’s a lot of pressure from families.
Madeline: Wait, so you did a clothing swap? I love clothing exchanges!
Michael: And I think that things like bridal showers and bachelorette parties can create a lot of waste, with silly hats and party favours, and other things that just get thrown out. Whereas a clothing swap doesn’t create additional waste, it’s an activity and you get something new out of it.
TB: Have you learned anything about planning that maybe you didn’t realize was such hard work?
Madeline: There’s the psychology aspect of it all. If you get to know these couples so well over the course of the planning you’re not there just for the planning aspect, but for the bumps along the road that sometimes take a psychology degree to handle! And if you’re not equipped…
Kimberly-Sue: And there’s the struggle between planning a wedding with quite a large budget versus someone who is trying to be frugal. We have a wedding like that on the show. We also have a….non-human wedding.
TB: Can we assume it’s a dog wedding?
Kimberly: Yes!
TB: Do you think you could work on weddings every day of your life?
All three: No!
Madeline: I feel like wedding planning is sometimes are about everything but the love. I mean, you get to the love at the end of the road, but it’s a long road to get to that love. I just like the love part! So to do it every day would be a little arduous.
Michael: Wait. I take it back. I think I could. Because I really like throwing parties. I throw bad-ass parties that have detail and decorations. I would have fun. And I would really try to push to get myself known as the guy you go to for a bit of a different wedding, so it’s not always the same.
Kimberly: You know what I would like? I would like to be a wedding photographer. I love photography and I find that to be able to capture that love for someone would be a unique experience.
The first episode of The Wedding Planners begins as the three new planners work with a bride who is more concerned about her social media followers than her fiancée. Don’t miss it, CityTV, March 27, 8:00 pm.
