The empire dress is not for everyone, but for some bodies it has figure-flattering details that work every well. It is snugly fitted just under the breasts, giving a high-waisted appearance. It is then loosely fitted, just skimming the body to the hem.
This is a style with a long history. It was introduced in France by Empress Josephine. It wasn’t given her name, however, until a century later, when the British christened it. It disappeared from fashion and was revived in the 1960’s when women threw away their girdles and opted for looser styles that were comfortable.
Where It Is Worn
The empire is another style that can adapt to the occasion. However, if it works best with light-weight fabrics. A fabric that is heavy or stiff makes the style unflattering whereas softer fabrics give the necessary flow.
Who It Flatters
The empire is perfect for the pear or triangle-shaped body – that is, the woman with the small breasts but larger hips. It does not present the best image for a woman with large breasts. The line drops from immediately under the breast and so it elongates the body’s appearance, which is a bonus for the woman who is short-waisted.
