Year-round sunshine, mild temperatures and golf courses designed by the big names make Virginia Beach a magnet for golfers. Accept the challenge on courses designed by Rees Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, George Cobb, Fred Couples and Gene Bates.
But Virginia Beach has so much more.
Its five-kilometre boardwalk is irresistible, with its park-like atmosphere, separate bike path and an invitation to walk, bike or jog. Then there’s those wide, sandy beaches.
There’s more than sea and sun
The area is alive with interesting attractions. There’s the Virginia Aquarium – one of the most visited in the United States. There are 300 hands-on exhibits and a half-kilometre-long nature trail connecting its two pavilions.
Get a glimpse of the past at the Cape Henry Lighthouse, which dates back to 1791.
The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts is in the town centre. It has a European feel, with only 30 metres separating the front of the stage and the farthest seat in the house.
The historic houses are fascinating: The Adam Thoroughgood House (circa 1680), The Lynnhaven House, the Ferry Plantation House and the Francis Land House give a satisfying taste of history.
The lure of the sea
Whether you choose to be on the Atlantic Ocean or Chesapeake Bay, you have your choice of peace and quiet or being right in the thick of the action.
Sunbathers come for the wide, sandy beaches and surfers come for the waves. So play volleyball on the beach, pop into a fine restaurant or build a sand castle while you create memories.
