Doug and Jennifer met in early October 2011. Doug, a canine unit handler with the greater Sudbury Police Service paid a school visit with his service dog to the life skills class Jennifer was an educational assistant in. They had met before but the spark between them was electric that day, and very shortly after that they knew they had both met the person they were meant to be with.
In August of 2013, Doug took Jennifer to the exact spot they had their first kiss and proposed. Doug said he knew the moment he kissed Jennifer that he was going to marry her, so it could not have been a more perfect place.
The couple had originally planned a destination wedding in the Bahamas for that same November, but in late October they found out that Jennifer’s mother had been diagnosed with colon cancer and was undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Doug insisted that they needed to have Jennifer’s mom there so they decided to delay the wedding. “It could not have been more beautiful and it was even more special that my mom was able to walk me down the aisle healthy and cancer free,” recalls Jennifer.
As for the couple’s favourite moment, for the groom, that’s an easy one. “Seeing my best friend walk down the aisle…I have never seen anyone that beautiful – she was breathtaking,” says Doug.
In lieu of party favours, the couple decided to make a donation to Joanne Prevett, the widow of late Constable Joe Prevett, a fellow colleague and friend of the groom. “It felt good knowing that we could do something nice for his family,” says Jennifer.
