You want your groom to look just as handsome on your wedding day as you look beautiful. Whether he rents a tuxedo or has one custom made, here’s how to make sure he looks his best.
If you’re opting for a custom suit:
David Tran, from Garrison Bespoke in Toronto, says that a custom suit can speak volumes. That’s because the piece has been made just for you, so it works for your body type.
David’s advice: Be aware that the craftsmanship and fabrics will ensure that you will be wearing it long after your wedding day. It can be tailored exactly the way you want it, with secret pockets, personality-revealing liners or a specially chosen fabric such as one with woven jade for good luck. The couple’s names and wedding date can be monogrammed. Each tailor will have a distinct style they’re most comfortable with, so ask to see samples of their garments. A good tailor will have a variety of in-progress pieces for you to review. They should also have a dedicated specialist to advise and guide you. Consider factors like the date, weather, natural sunlight or indoor photography, the groom’s complexion, wedding theme, colour scheme, budget and even the bride’s dress. Start the process six months in advance. It usually requires four fittings, sometimes five, depending on the man. Prices are primarily based on the fabrics and the details you choose.
If you’re planning to rent a tuxedo:
Joseph Abboud, Chief Creative Director at Moores, tells grooms to choose carefully.
Joseph’s advice: It’s important that you really trust the sales associates. They will give you good advice about style, size and fit, and will be able to tailor your tuxedo so it looks like it’s yours. That should be the aim: the groom should look as if he owns his suit. Pants are no longer long and wide – look for a sleeker, leaner suit that fits close to the body, no matter your body type. Grooms should set themselves apart from their groomsmen. If your groomsmen are wearing black bowties, the groom could wear one in ivory. Or be the only one to wear a vest – perhaps one that coordinates with the bridal party. If you’re having a casual or a resort wedding, go for an off-white dinner jacket instead of black. Grey is also really popular. Be sure to give yourself at least 30 days – you don’t want to scramble at the last minute, but you do want to give your bride some peace of mind. Prices will vary depending on the package.
