The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands stretching off the southern tip of Florida between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. It is famous for its laid-back vibe and bohemian spirit.
Key West is the southernmost tip of the U.S. Grab the Conch Tour Train or Old Town Trolley Tour to get yourself acclimatized and to learn about the colourful history of this small island. Stroll the streets and see the gingerbread-style houses (reminiscent of New Orleans), but watch out for free roaming roosters. A visit to the famous Hemingway Home & Museum, and petting the six-toed cats is a must. And, of course, walking the famous Duval Street for eateries, art galleries and nightlife. End your day at Mallory Square for the buskers and the magnificent sunset.
There are plenty of hotels, motels, inns and rentals on the Keys, but not as many full-scale, upscale resorts. Hawks Cay Resort is set on the island of Duck Key, located just south of Key Largo and has everything a honeymooning couple would need for a perfect getaway.
The ocean-front, 60-acre resort has 427 villas and hotel rooms. The villas are ideal for larger groups, but honeymooners might prefer the newly renovated chic penthouses and King Deluxe suites. They are beautifully appointed and many have ocean views and balconies or lanais with pool access.
There is a range of on-site dining, from the ample buffet et breakfast, to poolside lunch service. Dinner at the newly built craft beer hall Angler and Ale is a favourite.
Though the Keys are not known for sandy beaches, Hawks Cay has a manmade saltwater lagoon that not only provides a great swimming experience, but also affords secluded chaises on the fringe of the resort. There are five swimming pools, too, including the adults-only tranquility pool and a pool with a pirate-themed splash pad.
The award-winning Calm Waters Spa has a long menu of services, or if you’re looking for action, the onsite water sports include kayaking, kiteboarding, paddle boarding, guided jet ski tours (great fun), and SNUBA (a combination of scuba and snorkeling). There are also fishing charters and a full-service marina and store. Finish the day on a sunset cruise complete with champagne (you can board right on the premises), then enjoy a drink around the fire pit.
