When Leah and Jeremy Baruch were
planning their honeymoon, they knew
they wanted it to be exciting.
“We wanted to experience something
new and exotic and Jer thought South
Africa would be romantic,” says Leah.
“He was right!”
Here are Jeremy and Leah’s tips and
photos from their recent honeymoon.
Get help with your itinerary
(They
relied on Lion World Tours.) Also, speak
to your doctor about getting vaccinated
for diseases like malaria.
Go in the winter
Leah says, “We
went in the first half of February, which
is their summer. The weather was
beautiful. The mornings were cooler
and then the day got very hot as the
morning safari progressed. The nights
were nice.”
Be prepared for a long flight
Jeremy and Leah flew from Toronto to
New York (1 hour, 40 minutes), from
New York to Johannesburg (18 hours),
then on to their first lodge (1 hour).
Sightsee
Make time to visit Cape
Town. The couple stayed at the
luxurious Cape Grace Hotel and did a
Winelands tour and a Cape Peninsula
tour. They also visited the Cape of
Good Hope – the most south-western
point of the African continent.
Go on safari
Try the Sabi Sabi
Bush Lodge in the Sabi Sands Game
Reserve in Kruger National Park and
Royal Malewane Safari Lodge in the
Thornybush Game Reserve. (Rumour
has it that Elton John comes here every
year with friends like Elizabeth Hurley.)
Resort guides will take you on safari
where you are sure to see giraffes,
lions, hippos and zebras.
Try the local food and eat under the
stars
The couple ate kudu (a species
of antelope) and said it was “yummy”.
As they ate, they could hear elephants
in the distance. Each meal was served
on African-inspired plates and featured
a handmade menu with African art.
