In honour of our 35th anniversary, we’ve decided to take a stroll down memory and remember some of the most famous and influential celebrity weddings over the last 35 years. Whether the fashion was simple and classic or just over the top, we can say that each of these weddings set a trend for brides to come.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles – 1981
It’s one of the most (if not the most) talked about wedding dresses of all time, so it’s no wonder that Princess Diana’s wedding dress has influenced bridal style throughout the years. On her wedding day to Prince Charles, Princess Di wore this custom-designed Elizabeth and David Emmanuel dress with puff sleeves and frilly neckline. Her train, a jaw-dropping 25-feet, was made of ivory taffeta and antique lace and since the 80’s were all about big hair and even bigger dresses, Diana’s wedding dress is the epitome of 1980’s fashion.
Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown – 1992
The 90’s saw big, bold fashion statements that were a clear departure from the 70’s and 80’s. Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s style was just that – big and bold – on their wedding day. Whitney was a show-stopper when she donned this Mark Bouwer dress and beaded headpiece. Her look was both vintage and fashion forward. The couples lavish wedding hosted 800 guests on Houston’s $11 million estate in Mendham, New jersey.
John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette -1996
Engaged to the son of a former President of the United States, one would think that a princess ball gown is required at your nuptials. But the 90’s saw a break from traditional, voluminous gowns and a move towards the sleek, slender and sexy looks. That’s exactly the look Carolyn Bessette emulated on her wedding day to John K. Kennedy Jr. Her streamline Narcisco Rodriquez dress suited their fall wedding in Georgia well. Carolyn had simple accessories and her hair was pulled back into a small bun, away from her face being one of the first to show that simple bridal beauty is best.
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt – 2000
As we entered into the millenium, the start of celebrity wedding fan-demonium grew more than ever before. Jennifer Aniston’s wedding to Brad Pitt was one of the first to become front-page news rather than an entertainment tidbit. Aniston wore a beaded silk and satin Lawrence Steele gown, and her hair was styled in loose waves which is one of the most asked-for wedding hairdos to this day. The new era continued to focus on fitted and sheath silhouettes as opposed to big, full gowns from years before.
Prince William and Kate Middleton – 2011
If you were one of the few people living on a remote island on April 29, 2011 then you missed one of the most famous bridal fashion moments in history. When Kate Middleton married Prince William she wowed the world as she stepped out of her car in her custom-made Alexander McQueen wedding dress. Classic, elegant, modern and chic were all words used to describe Kate Middleton’s dress style, and few even compared it to the wedding gown Grace Kelly wore on her wedding day to Prince Rainer III of Monaco. Recreations of the dress were ready in as little as six hours of seeing it unveiled for the first time. It is without a doubt one of the most admired and sought-after wedding dresses since Princess Diana’s.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel – 2012
The last few years we’ve seen many bridal designers feature full colour wedding gowns. So when Justin Timberlake married longtime girlfriend Jessica Biel, she wore a floral pink Giambattista Valli dress for their Italian wedding and was right on trend. It was the perfect hue for a sunset ceremony in romantic Puglia, Italy. Its classic style was also very fashion forward as Biel’s dress had tiers of fabric on the skirt.
