Mexico’s Riviera Maya is a popular honeymoon destination for newlyweds, and for good reason. Between the sunshine, beaches and tequila, how can you go wrong?
With great food, high-end properties, sunny weather and adventurous activities, Mexico’s Riviera Maya is the perfect place to spend a week or two celebrating your vows.
The area is not short on gorgeous resorts, so choosing can be tricky. Barceló Maya Grand Resort is a good place to start, particularly if you are interested in stepping out of your room into your private pool. The Swim Up Suites are well worth the investment of upgrading to Club Premium.
Set aside a few hours (or more) for the U-Spa Wellness and Fitness Center. The hydrotherapy circuit, featuring aromatherapy showers, steam room, sauna and hot and cold (very cold) plunge pools will ready your muscles for the incredible outdoor pool, which features dozens of powerful massage jets. And when you think you can’t be any more relaxed, treat yourself to a couple’s massage, complete with sparkling wine and chocolate-covered strawberries.
Off-property, there is plenty to do, especially if you are up for a little adventure. Snorkeling at Xel-Há Park can’t be missed. You’ll be amazed as you swim amongst hundreds of tropical fish and incredible plant life. Or just chill in the lazy river, take a nap in a hammock and enjoy unlimited drinks.
Go back in time and explore the ancient ruins of Tulum. A tour only takes about an hour, but does require some walking and climbing. Come prepared with comfy shoes and an inquisitive mind. Combine the Xel-Há and Tulum excursions into one all-day trip.
For shopping, Playa del Carmen isn’t far and can offer all the retail therapy your heart desires. Walk the famous 5th Avenue Playa del Carmen for crafts, artwork, tequila, blankets and tapestries. You’re sure to find the perfect souvenirs.
After your day out, head back to the Barceló Maya Grand and visit the Maya Mall, which contains a variety of shops and restaurants. Grab a nightcap at Strikers Sports Bar or bust a move at Jaguar’s Discotheque.
5 things to do in Riviera Maya
1. Drink mezcal and tequila. This is a given.
2. Go bowling at Barceló Maya Grand’s Strikers Sports Bar.
3. Swim in a cenote (natural cave), but keep it clean: no sunscreen or insect repellant.
4. Eat all the tacos. All. The. Tacos.
5.Make the trek to visit Chichen Itza, the stunning Mayan ruins and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
