Modern fêtes are anything but formulaic, and that includes destination weddings. Long gone are the days of standardized all-inclusive wedding packages with zero personalization. In fact, destination wedding offerings around the world are trending entirely in the opposite direction: if you can dream it, they can do it. This is especially good news for couples planning cultural destination weddings abroad, which require specialized care and attention to detail.
“Across the board, we’re seeing much greater demand for destination wedding ceremonies that fit the specific desires of couples,” says John K. Hawks, executive director of the Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association. “Destination weddings are now a much more common choice for couples, so they know they can ask for the same [customization] they might request if they were saying their vows at home.”
Bespoke service, especially when it comes to cultural considerations, has become so important that, according to Hawks, many resorts, especially in popular tourist destinations, have prioritized upskilling staff on the intricacies of celebratory traditions and expanding their vendor networks to cater to specific dietary and ceremonial needs.
Hyper-personalization is indeed emerging as the new norm, but planning a cultural celebration – especially overseas – requires finding a venue that also offers a fine balance of flexibility, expertise, access and organizational precision. With this in mind, we set out to discover the destinations and properties that truly specialize in specific types of cultural destination weddings.
South Asian weddings
With large guest lists, rich customs, specific dietary requirements and festivities that run the better part of a week, South Asian celebrations can be among the most complex weddings to plan and execute abroad. Mexico has responded by emerging as a go-to spot for these grand multi-day, multi-event celebrations.
On the Pacific coast, Grand Velas Los Cabos is particularly well-versed in such celebrations, pairing deep cultural understanding with operational meticulousness. This property boasts an expansive oceanfront setting ideal for a Sangeet (pre-wedding celebration) or Baraat (groom’s wedding procession) as well as a culinary program specializing in authentic regional Indian cuisines.
“One wedding that truly stands out was a multi-day celebration where the couple envisioned bringing a traditional Indian wedding atmosphere into a beachfront setting without compromising authenticity,” says Gina Jimenez, Corporate Director of Weddings at Velas Resorts.“To achieve this, our team coordinated closely with international and local vendors to design a fully customized Mandap overlooking the ocean, incorporating traditional floral elements, intricate textiles, and a structure adapted to withstand coastal conditions without losing its cultural essence. For the Baraat, we transformed the arrival experience into a vibrant beachfront procession, complete with live dhol players.”
On the Caribbean coast, Secrets Playa Mujeres and its neighbouring sister property Dreams Playa Mujeres, offer a unique two-in-one resort experience particularly well-suited for larger, multi-generational groups.On-site wedding coordinators undergo specialized training in South Asian traditions and couples can take advantage of the special Dulha & Dulhan Wedding Package, which can act as a starting point for a customized multi-day celebration.
Weddings Manager Yamina Bermundez recalls one such celebration, which unfolded over four days and gradually transformed different areas of the resort complex into a series of distinct yet connected experiences, from a mehndi garden party to a Sangeet with custom-designed stage. The Baraat was a particular highlight, featuring a procession kicked off by a high-energy batucada performance followed by a deejay performing from a moving pickup truck while family and friends danced alongside. “The experience culminated at the wedding gazebo on the beach, where the groom’s arrival on horseback completed the moment,” says Bermundez.
Chinese weddings
Auspicious red and gold décor, a morning tea ceremony to honour elders and an elegant reception featuring an elaborate multi-course banquet are hallmarks of Chinese wedding celebrations. And when it comes to offering celebratory grandeur in a paradisical setting, Hawaii is unrivalled.
Couples should set their sights on the island of Oahu, specifically the Halekulani Hotel, an iconic beachfront property in Waikiki with a name that aptly translates into “House Befitting Heaven”.

Our commitment is to create a seamless and elevated experience, regardless of the cultural elements involved,” she adds.
LGBTQ+ weddings
One of the most important considerations for LGBTQ+ couples marrying abroad is that the destination itself is supportive, safe and legally recognizes same-sex marriage. Access to inclusive vendors is also paramount. Puerto Rico, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015, fits the bill with its vibrant culture and stunning tropical scenery. In fact, it’s quickly gaining a reputation as the most LGBTQ+-friendly destination in the Caribbean.
The lively Condado area of San Juan is particularly well-known for its inclusive atmosphere. La Concha Resort, an oceanfront property with a striking seashell-shaped restaurant and lively nightlife as well as its adults-only sister property, Condado Ocean Club, are both great picks for same-sex celebrations.

Spiritual weddings
Rather than adhering to any one set of structured religious beliefs, spiritual weddings are typically rooted in nature and emphasize the emotional, energetic and mindful connection between two partners.
Melding ancient Mayan wisdom, modern holistic wellness and lush scenery, Guatemala has established itself as a premier destination for introspection, energy healing and connecting with nature. The shores of Lake Atitlán, a volcanic crater known as the “Mirror of the Soul” surrounded by towering volcanoes, provide the perfect entrée to Guatemala’s divine riches.
Few properties can cater to couples as well as Casa Palopó, a breathtaking luxury boutique hotel with 15 rooms and suites boasting natural beauty, cultural richness and the calming energy of Lake Atitlán.
“Casa Palopó offers couples the opportunity to incorporate meaningful spiritual and cultural elements into their wedding celebrations in ways that feel authentic, intentional and deeply connected to the spirit of Lake Atitlán,” says Weddings and Events Sales Executive Ana Paula Zedan. “One of the most requested experiences is a traditional Mayan blessing ceremony led by a local shaman, which can be integrated into the wedding itself or offered as a private ritual before the ceremony begins. These experiences are designed to encourage mindfulness, emotional connection, gratitude and presence among the couple and their guests.”
Jewish weddings
On top of its beautiful scenery, world-class beaches and convenient location, The Bahamas has emerged as a top destination for Jewish weddings abroad, offering everything from oceanfront chuppahs and kosher cuisine to Shabbat-friendly amenities.
Set within the sprawling Baha Mar resort destination in Nassau, the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar may be the best equipped hotel in the Caribbean to host a Jewish celebration. The property boasts customizable chuppah set-ups, on-site eruv, both a kosher meat and dairy kitchen as well as rabbinic access and religious-service support via the property’s strong relationship with Chabad of Bahamas.
“My role is to help couples and their families feel comfortable, heard and confident that the details that matter most to them – from kosher dining needs to cultural traditions and religious observances –are understood and thoughtfully handled,” says Jennifer Goodman, Event Sales Manager at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar.“We can offer kosher menus for weddings, along with access to several kosher dining options on property, including a kosher food truck and pre-packaged kosher meals. We can also support Shabbat services and minyan options.”
Beyond traditional offerings, couples can add Bahamian flair to their celebrations by hiring the property’s resident flock of flamingos to attend the Bedeken (pre-wedding ritual), mingle with guests during cocktail hour or even walk down the aisle during the wedding procession.
EXPERT PLANNING TIPS
Book at least a year in advance and give guests plenty of notice
Take a trip to your venue ahead of time to familiarize yourself with your wedding planning team and finalize the details
Have a backup plan for any outdoor festivities, which can be impacted by unpredictable tropical weather
Communicate clearly — in writing, months in advance – any cultural “must haves”. If an open flame is necessary at the ceremony site or a specific style of chuppah is needed, resorts require plenty of advance notice
