Romantic portraits will always have their place, but funny wedding photos? Those are the ones that can instantly take you back to the glorious chaos of the day. The champagne exploding everywhere, your best friend’s face during the speeches, the moment someone handed your uncle from out of town a microphone and things got… interesting.
While you can’t manufacture genuine laughter, you can make sure your wedding photographer knows you want the unscripted, high-energy moments along with the beautifully composed ones.
Add these to your shot list, then give everyone permission to have some fun!
1. The reaction shot
Never underestimate what’s happening just outside the main frame. Your parents or your fiancé seeing you for the first time, bridesmaids reacting to an unexpectedly spicy speech or your guests absolutely losing it during the ceremony can produce some of the day’s best photographs.

2. The champagne spray
A bottle of bubbly, a vigorous shake and absolutely no concern for keeping everyone dry. Champagne sprays create funny wedding photos with movement, laughter and just the right amount of beautiful mayhem.

3. Wedding party in motion
This is where everyone gets to loosen up a little. Run toward the camera, dance down a hotel hallway, race across the lawn, pile into a golf cart or pop a bottle of champagne together. A little movement brings out real expressions – windblown hair, huge laughs, dresses in motion – and gives you wedding party photos that feel far more alive than anything perfectly posed.

4. Kids doing absolutely anything
Give a flower girl one simple instruction and there’s an excellent chance she’ll do something completely different.
Kids sitting in the aisle, making faces during portraits, sneaking desserts or abandoning their flower baskets halfway through the ceremony are photographic gold. Rather than trying to correct every moment, let your photographer keep clicking.
5. The beautifully blurred dance floor
Not every wedding photograph needs to be tack sharp. In fact, a little blur can make the reception feel even more alive.
Think direct flash, spinning dresses, hands overhead and bodies moving through the frame. These shots capture the pulse of the party rather than freezing it, especially once the dance floor is packed.

6. The groomsmen lift
The classic groomsmen lift works because nobody looks completely composed while doing it. Someone is struggling, someone is laughing and the groom is usually wondering whether trusting his friends was a terrible idea. It’s exactly the energy we want.

7. The messy bite
A perfectly styled wedding deserves at least one photograph involving a very imperfect bite of food.
Grab the late-night pizza, burger, taco or doughnut and forget about looking elegant for 30 seconds. The contrast between immaculate wedding attire and complete commitment to a midnight snack makes these funny wedding photos particularly good.

8. The cake-smash laugh
You don’t need to send an entire slice flying across the room. Even a tiny swipe of icing can do it.
What matters is the reaction immediately afterward – the shocked face, the laugh and that brief moment when the other person decides whether retaliation is warranted. Tell your wedding photographer to keep shooting after the cake cutting rather than lowering the camera once the ceremonial bite is finished.
9. Taking over the DJ booth
At some point in the evening, somebody may decide the hired professional needs assistance.
Pop on the headphones, get behind the booth and work the crowd for a minute. Whether you actually know what those buttons do is completely irrelevant. With the dance floor going behind you, the photos can look ridiculously fun.
10. The champagne tower overflow
The elegant first pour is lovely. The moment champagne starts bubbling over three levels of coupes while everyone scrambles to catch it? Even better.
Don’t worry about making the pour perfectly precise. Let the bubbly flow, laugh when it spills and enjoy the moment for what it is. A little overflow adds movement, personality and just enough beautiful chaos to turn a polished champagne tower photo into one of those funny wedding photos you’ll love even more.

11. Veil gone wild
A gust of wind, a spinning dance move or an overenthusiastic toss can turn a delicate veil into the wedding day’s most unpredictable prop. Photographers should be ready to catch the moment it wraps around a groomsman’s face, tangles mid-twirl on the dance floor, or billows dramatically behind the bride like a cape. These unscripted seconds often become the shots guests talk about long after the polished portraits are forgotten.

12. Shoes off, party on
There comes a point when beautiful heels lose the battle.
Capture the bride dancing barefoot, someone waving a shoe overhead or the collection of abandoned stilettos slowly forming underneath a reception table. By this stage, everyone has usually stopped worrying about the camera, which makes it prime time for wonderfully candid, funny wedding photos.
