When planning their July 2024 wedding, Charlot and Jonathan knew they needed a destination where their families, who are scattered throughout Europe and Canada, could “meet in the middle.” They settled on Portugal’s Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais, a five-star hotel set in the mountainside of Sintra that instantly brought tears to Charlot’s eyes. With its expansive grounds, opulent interiors and views that stretch all the way to the iconic Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, Valverde was the perfect choice for a fairytale palace wedding – one that effortlessly blended European elegance with the warmth and charm of Portuguese culture.
From the historic architecture to the lush gardens and romantic atmosphere, every corner of the palace felt steeped in history and beauty, creating a backdrop as unforgettable as the day itself.
The couple kicked off their two-day wedding with a lively welcome party that showcased the best of Portuguese hospitality. Guests were treated to traditional dishes, regional wines and live music that filled the air with the sounds of Portugal. To make the experience even more special, Charlot and Jonathan gifted their guests handmade tile and cork trivets – thoughtful keepsakes that celebrated the country’s famous craftsmanship.
Jonathan looked equally dashing in a classic tuxedo by Lardini, with a sharp bow tie that added a dash of old-world charm. The couple’s first look and portraits, captured by renowned photographers Vanessa and Ivo, highlighted the stunning architecture of the palace grounds and the undeniable love between the bride and groom. Known for their editorial flair and cinematic style, Vanessa and Ivo’s work gave the day an extra layer of artistry, ensuring every moment of this palace wedding felt like a frame from a European romance film.
The ceremony itself was pure magic. Charlot arrived in a horse-drawn carriage, escorted by her father, as a live string quartet played softly in the background. Surrounded by lush white florals designed by Liz Garden, the couple exchanged vows against the backdrop of Valverde’s grand facade – a setting that felt both intimate and larger-than-life.
Dinner took place in the palace’s opulent dining hall, where long tables were dressed in crisp linens, gleaming glassware and elegant floral arrangements. Guests enjoyed a multi-course meal inspired by local flavors before moving into the ballroom for dancing.
The wedding cake was one of the night’s sweetest highlights – a custom four-tier creation by award-winning designer Julie Deffense. Decorated in an all-white design with delicate gold accents, the cake featured layers of caramel and almond Swiss meringue buttercream, a flavor combination that left guests raving.
With a first dance choreographed by the lovely Antoaneta Popova, Pro World 10 Dance Champion, a sparkler send-off and DJ Zecka Pinheiro keeping the dance floor packed, Charlot and Jonathan’s wedding was a celebration that beautifully honored their love story, their families and the magic of Portugal.
