Then, there’s the feel of it against the body. It can feel sensual and exciting. The bottom line is that the story about fabric is the first chapter in the story about choosing a bridal gown.
The perfect fabric
The ideal fabric for one woman will not be ideal for another woman. Generally speaking, however, a heavier fabric gives the body needed for a big Scarlet O’Hara skirt, while a lightweight fabric has a romantic feel for a style that follows the line of the body.
Choices
- Silk in a variety of types and weights – is first choice of many of the top designers. But silk is almost generic, because it is available in so many types and weights.
- Silk georgette is the preference of many designers because it is not too heavy or too stiff and tends to be figure-flattering.
- Silk organza is an option because it holds its shape well although, for some figures, can be a little stiff. Note that not all organza is silk.
- Taffeta was a long-time favourite for bridesmaid gowns, but is less popular now – primarily because it can be stiff and not the best choice for women who are concerned about a weight problem.
- Velvet is rarely seen these days, but can be glorious and sophisticated for a winter wedding. And why not add a white faux fox muff?
