When Marco Polo visited Hangzhou 800 years ago, he said, “In heaven, there is paradise; on earth, there is Hangzhou.”
Take in the West Lake with its scenic island, surrounding mountains and temples, pagodas and parks. It is recreating itself as a modern city with chic hotels and four-star restaurants, but its culture is still found in its waterways, temples, old-style shopping streets, cuisine and museums. Be prepared to take it all in.
Great Food
The cuisine is light and crisp, known for its elaborate preparation and sophisticated cooking. Best known are beggar’s chicken (a chicken baked in clay) and West Lake shrimp cooked with tea. Drink Dragon Well tea, famous for its green colour, aroma and sweet taste.
Shopping
Their pure silks are shipped all over the world. Go to Hangzhiu Silk City at No. 253 Xinhua road for fabric, scarves, ties and more. The International Silk Festival takes place every october.
What to Do
Don’t miss Impression West Lake. The stage is built below the surface of the lake so dancers appear to be dancing on water.
