My husband and I found a charming village that we could have easily missed if we weren’t looking. It is Montebello – nestled along the Ottawa River encompassing only eight square kilometers, but it definitely packs some star attractions. We discovered that, although small, the village has several B&Bs and inns, but my husband and I opted to stay at the famous Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello, which is purported to be the largest log cabin in the world. Its façade may look rustic, but inside it’s anything but. In fact, the hotel has played host to numerous historic meetings, including the G7 international economic summit. The hotel grounds house more than 26 kilometres of trails for hiking, sleigh rides, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding. In summer, there’s golf, tennis, squash, horseback riding and an outdoor pool.
Places To Go
We loved Parc Omega, a 1,500-acre animal sanctuary with coyotes, deer, bison and a variety of other wildlife, all living in their natural habitat. You can drive or take a walking trail and stop for a picnic among the deer. Don’t miss Camp Explora; it is for those seeking a little more adventure. You and a co-pilot drive your own electric ATV, equipped with a navigational system and treasure map to help you find clues along the way to unlock the mystery.
Local Treats
Chocomotive Chocolate Company and Café is a little slice of paradise for the chocolate connoisseur. Watch the master chocolate makers in action while you sample their delectable treats. Check out Fromagerie Montebello for fresh locally made cheese. Be sure to try their homemade patés, jams and ice-cream. Manoir-Papineau, the former residence of influential politician Louise-Joseph Papineau, is a national historic site. This elegant space can be rented for private functions.
